CPU

What is a "CPU"?

CPU is an abbreviation for Central Processing Unit. In general terms, the CPU may mean the computer itself without the attached mouse, keyboard, and other accessories or peripherals. CPU is more commonly used to refer to the actual microprocessor inside your computer. Common brands of CPUs include offerings from Intel and AMD, allthough there are other types of CPUs other types are not common in Personal Computers.

Common criteria for evaluating the differences between CPUs (processors) include speed which is typically measured in MegaHertz. This represents the frequency at which a certain microprocessor is capable of proccessing data. In the most general case Megahertz (MHz) is a basic unit for measuring the speed of a computer, allthough it is not the only factor.

The Bus Speed ( also measured in MHz ) is another factor that is greatly indicative of the speed of a particular CPU. A CPU that is capable of performing at a higher bus speed is frequently able to outperform a faster CPU that only operates at a lower buss speed. For this reason, you should be aware of the Bus Speed of any processor you are considering. Computer Applications that require lots of memory, or computer systems that may use many different applications at the same time often benefit significantly from a CPU that operates at a higher bus speed.

Modern CPUs frequently have more than on "core", and you may hear of CPUs that are called "Dual Core", "Quad Core", or greater. A core is effectively a second CPU that is integrated or "stacked" into the same circuit as another CPU allowing two or more processors to be delivered on the same piece of hardware. This allows your computer to divide work between two or more "cores" and increase performance. When considering a Multiple Core CPU, you should take careful consideration that the motherboard you are planning to use supports the processor you are evaluating.
