Linux For Human Beings - A Linux Desktop thats ready for primetime

Linux enthusiasts have known for a long time that Linux was excellent for use as a webserver. But despite Linux's success in the server arena, no distribution has yet to make an viable desktop for a non technical person. That may change with Ubuntu's latest offering. Allthough we are fond of many other Linux distros, "Edgy Eft" or Ubuntu 6.10 LTS is the easiest most hassle free distribution that we've come across.

Ubuntu is extremely stable and secure, and is based off the Debian distribution so you can easily use familiar Debian Linux tools such as apt for installing and configuring software, and a beginner who is not yet completely at home with using Linux's command line will be instantly at home with Debian's excellent set of graphical software installation tools that work excellently with the polished Gnome desktop.

The installation of Ubuntu is one of the easiest installations of any Operating System that I've ever encountered. The entire installation including partitioning and formatting of hard disks can be accomplished in under half an hour. On the several systems we've tested, sound, video, network, and webcams were all detected automatically and instantly worked in a way that should make Microsoft ashamed of themselves.

One of the best things about Ubuntu is that you don't even have to download the ISO images of CDs and attempt to burn or create the CDs yourself which can be difficult for a beginner using windows. Ubuntu features ShipIt! were they will ship you free CDs of the latest 6.10 Long Term Stable release - A great way to try Linux with little hassle and completely free. Simply put the CD into your computer and restart and a few minutes later you will be running the demonstration Ubuntu system right from the CD completely leaving your Windows system intact and untouched. Then when you've had a chance to see what Ubuntu has to offer, you can install Ubuntu permanently if you choose by simply clicking an icon and following some very simple instuctions.

Ubuntu comes complete with Open Office 2.0 a completly free and fully functional office suite, the world famous Firefox webbrowser, and GAIM a wonderful internet instant messaging program as well as a wide assortment of internet utilities, office tools, movie and music players and even games! In short it comes with everything you need to enjoy your computer and its 100% free for you to use and share.

Matthew Garrett: The fallacy of the completely inclusive community

Emma Jane Hogbin gave a presentation on the gender gap in free software at Lugradio Live this weekend. One of the central messages was that a great deal of how to avoid putting women off computing can be distilled down to "Don't be a dick". This ties in well with Mako's restatement of the Ubuntu cod...

iPhone Reconciliation

It's amusing to see a bunch of people in the tech community having trouble reconciling their love for the iPhone vs. how closed and proprietary it is. It's a real conundrum... The iPhone 3G is the best mobile phone there is, bar none, in both functionality and usability. It's also relatively inexpen...
